We were joined by Ricky Powell at Bread & Butter, Berlin this past week. The Funky Uncle was on hand to talk us through a twenty or so year career in which Ricky captured the likes of Big Daddy Kane, Cindy Crawford, Spike Lee, Dave Chapelle, Eazy E and Andy Warhol amongst many others. Ricky’s incredible archive provides just a snapshot of his colourful backstory which can count Keith Haring, Basquiat and Dondi as friends and cohorts.
After the jump check out the video recap created by Kevin Morosky and more information on our project with Ricky Powell.
The self-confessed Product Of New York hosted his live slideshow taking attendees on an adventure through the 5 boroughs and uptown’s most infamous nightlife tales. Ricky Powell’s anecdotes provide the perfect context and offer unrivalled insights into a world and era mythicised by Hollywood and Hip Hop alike. A range of Streetwear fanatics, media and friends of PONY joined us in this unrivalled celebration of arguably New York’s most exciting cultural period.
We transported our New York loft apartment to Berlin, the intimate setting was soundtracked by Ricky’s ‘The Funky Uncle Park Bench Mixtape’ to celebrate 40 years of PONY and the PONY x Ricky Powell collaboration.
The PONY x Ricky Powell collaboration is made up of the Vintage Slamdunk in two colourways, three tee shirts emblazoned with some of Ricky’s most iconic images and an accessory proudly boasting one of Ricky’s favourite sayings, ‘Do You’.
